The Story Behind the Song
Written by Dexter Berrogain and Rosemary Watson
"A harbor at night, just needs one light."
This is the true story behind the song, inspired by a real-life moment with Tina Fey.
While exploring the theme of what it means to belong, Rosemary recalled a fleeting but profound moment from the 2013 Mark Twain Prize for Humor at The Kennedy Center. She had been invited by her idol, Carol Burnett, to perform at the PBS-televised event honoring the comedy icon.
After the show, an illustrious, star-studded cast—including Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett, Tim Conway, Martin Short, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph etc...—gathered for a group photo. Not wanting to overstep, Rosemary waited quietly in the wings for the legends to find their spots.
Tina Fey, who was emceeing the event, noticed her standing to the side. She patted the empty chair right next to her and said, "Rosemary, come sit here."
That small gesture stayed with Rosemary for over a decade. It became the lyrical spark for the song: the beautiful idea that we can all be a beacon in someone else's dark harbor. A simple, passing act of kindness to one person can mean the absolute world to another.
